About the Study

The purpose of the study is to obtain input from employees making trips in a commercial vehicle as part of their job in the Piedmont Triad region. Drivers of vehicles engaged in commercial business activities ranging from small passenger cars to heavy duty vehicles may participate in the study. Over a period of three days, drivers will be asked to report their work travel using the study-specific smartphone application.

The data collected in the study will be used throughout the Triad region to make predictions about future commercial vehicle travel demands; to guide transportation investment decisions; and to contribute to a better understanding of and influence planning for future commercial vehicle travel needs across the region and state.

Commercial transport improvements are necessary to maintain and enhance the region’s quality of life and business environment. This study will help agencies prioritize future improvements to address the changing needs of communities across the Triad.

What is a work trip?

A work trip is any trip that you make where the primary purpose of that trip was for work purposes. Work trips do not include your typical commute to/from work.
Some examples of work trips include:
  • Drive from headquarters to service location.
  • Drive from warehouse to delivery location.
  • Drive from home to service location.
  • A trip to a lunch location and back to work (or a work destination) made in your commercial vehicle.

What if I make a non-work trip or a trip by foot, bicycle, or transit?

When the app asks you if the trip it recorded was a work trip, simply tap on ‘No’.

Why are the locations and times you arrive and leave your location important to the study?

This information helps determine how the transportation system is being used, allowing us to plan for future improvements and investments.

I was invited to use the study smartphone app, rMove. How does it work?

Once you’ve had the rMove app downloaded for at least 3 full workdays and have completed all of your surveys for those days, you are eligible to receive the $100 Visa Gift card. No partial, incomplete, or missing responses will be considered as a ‘complete’ survey. Your gift card will be emailed to you within 2-3 weeks of completing the study.
